About
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for students to inspire creative thinking about science.
Students ages 13 to 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original videos (5 minutes in length maximum) that bring to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics or mathematics.
The submissions are judged on the student’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways. The Challenge is organized by The Breakthrough Prize Foundation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Gender: Both
- Region: Global (expect Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria)
- Class/Age: 13 to 18 years of age
Details
- The participant must be of 13 to 18 years as on October 10, 2016
- Participants from all over the globe can participate expect Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.As you are a minor, you must have your parent's or legal guardian's permission to enter and your parent or legal guardian must agree, on your behalf and on his or her own behalf, to follow and be bound by these RULES and warrant that you are eligible to participate in the Competition.
- The participant cannot reside in nor be governed by countries that are prohibited by law, regulation (including United States laws and regulations or other applicable export laws and regulations), treaty or administrative act from entering into trade relations (including export of technology) with the United States of America or its citizens.
- Entries are limited to individuals only; commercial enterprises and business entities are not eligible.
- Any donor, director, officer, employee, contractor to or of Competition Sponsor, members of the Evaluation Panel and the Selection Committee and any of the foregoing’s family members or those living in the same household are prohibited from entering the Competition.
Reward
Breakthrough Winner will receive the following prizes
Awards Amount
Post-secondary scholarship $250,000
Prize for your teacher $50,000
Breakthrough Science Lab $100,000
Apart from the above mentioned cash prizes money the winners will get a trip along with their parent and guardian to receive their award at the Breakthrough live televised Prize award on December 4, 2016.
How to Apply
To take part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, create a short video (5 minutes max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields:
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Life Sciences
Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.

Selection Process
The videos will be judged according to the following criteria:
- Engagement
- Illumination
- Creativity
- Difficulty

Peer-to-Peer Review
- Once you’ve registered and submitted your application, making sure it’s complete and valid, you’ll be requested to participate in the to Peer-to-Peer Review process.
- In order to qualify for the Challenge, you must score at least 5 other submissions by October 16, 2016, at 11:59 PM PDT (West Coast USA).After that, you may also be asked to review and score additional videos as well.
Evaluation panel
- The next step is the review of the Evaluation Panel which is composed of top-class scholars and teachers in the relevant fields from the khan Academy.
Selection Committee Review
- The last review and score of the top group of Semi-Finalists as determined by the Evaluation Panel will be finalized lastly by the review of the Selection committee.
Breakthrough Junior Challenge Result
- The winners will be announced on the live televised Breakthrough prize Ceremony which will be held on December 4, 2016.
- In addition to this, the name of the winner will be posted on the official website of Breakthrough Junior Challenge

- Submission of video starts from September 1, 2016
- Submission of Video ends on October 10, 2016
- Peer to Peer Review will be on October 16, 2016
