Walt Disney once famously said, “If
you can dream it, you can do it”. Today, we now live in an era which
perfectly embodies the Walt Disney’s statement.
So, if you have dreams to achieve, then go for it. But let me warn you
that Dreaming isn’t enough. In fact, dreaming is just the first half of the
entire story. “Doing” is what completes it. Fulfilment of dreams isn’t
accomplished by procrastinating. Visualising yourself as a successful
individual won’t make you one. You have to put in serious efforts to make that
happen. Dreams only come true when a lot of hard work is put into them.
When you set your eyes on a road, you need a path and a destination to
reach there. Similar is the case with the dreams – you need a Vision and Strategy
to fulfil them. The vision acts as the destination, while the strategy forms
the path to get there.
Unfortunately positive thinking isn’t as effective as positive action. Both
of them need each other’s company. Do not worry, as I am not telling you to
kill your dreams, I am merely suggesting that it is time to put down that copy
of The Secret and follow the below:
- BE PATIENT
You are young
and eager to get ahead in the world, but somehow every obstacle seems like the
end of the road. Confusions arise and they arise in abundance and you start
feeling there is nowhere that you can go. You start feeling miserable when you
are unable to find a way ahead. This often leads to giving up. DO NOT GIVE UP.
You may think that it is the end of the world, but it isn’t. If a mathematical
equation goes over your head, take a deep breath and attempt to do it again. Patience
is the key. So “Be Patient” and look for alternatives. May be you can take some
help from your seniors and peers. Rome wasn’t built in a day! The author of the
globally acclaimed book series “Harry Potter”, J.K. Rowling was going through
troubled times during the conception of the book. She was going through a
divorce and her mother had died recently. I bet you do not have it this rough. So
remain calm and keep your pushing at your targets. The point is to be patient,
and you will be pleasantly surprised on how things can take a U-turn.
- STOP MAKING EXCUSES
So you have
dreams, but you are being lazy. You love dreaming but hate all the hard work
involved in making it come true. You are neither the first nor the last person
to feel that. Distractions are ubiquitous. It is your responsibility to stay
away from them. If you don’t take control of your mind,
it will run amok. It may sound difficult to control your mind, but believe
me it can turn out to be very simple and fun too. Just follow simple steps, and
you can be the master of your own-self. Let us take an example àyou are
facing lot of difficulties in concentrating on the text in front of you, then
what do you do. Do you shut the book and plan to concentrate sometime later?
No, that is not the solution. Here, is a very simple, but effective solution:
1.
Make notes, or
2.
Read it aloud, or
3.
Call your batch-mates/ friends to discuss the subject
You can split
down the task at hand into smaller and very achievable targets to get going.
Once you see the small-small targets getting accomplished, you will feel
elated. It will motivate you to keep going further.
Stop yourself
for getting into the excuse mode. That will be an endless list, and the goal
will seem further and further away.
- DON’T LOSE FOCUS
Keep your eye
on your target. Become one who has a purpose and remain focussed.
It may very
often happen that you set out to do a subject, but find it the most difficult
one. Hence, you end up taking shelter in the arms of another easier subject.
So, the very 1st question is that how to tackle this problem. Follow
the simple steps as mentioned below, and you will see the difference:
1. Make a list of
all your topics
2. Put a target
to the complete list
3. Cover your
topics according to it.
4. Pamper
your-self on the completion of each target (be it small or big; be it difficult
or easy)
Don’t ever
try to accomplish something without a plan. It will always end up in disaster.
Every building has an architect who designs every floor plan meticulously. The
construction company gives a time period to their customers within which they will
deliver their product. Only then do they go forth with the construction. Why
should cementing your dreams into reality be any different?
- LEARN TO ACCEPT FAILURE
Once upon a
time, there was a tyrant who dreamt of world domination, his subjects called
him Führer Hitler. He loved doing evil things. He found
happiness by invading countries and exterminating Jewish. He went about his way
but only until when his enemies who believed in capitalism and democracy formed
an alliance (The Allies). Once that alliance was formed, his glory days came to
an end. On failing to accomplish his dreams and facing defeat at the hands of
his enemies, he blew his head off. Yes he shot himself. Probably did the entire
world a favour. But I digress; my point is that not everyone’s dreams come
true. Learn to deal with it. If you gave it your best then that should satisfy
you. This world isn’t kind to everyone. Move on to your back up plan. No matter
how cliché the quote is, but it is always true, “Failures are the stepping-stone
to success”.
- BE ALERT
Time is a
priceless commodity and it gets over too fast for our liking. Nobody has
unlimited time in the world. Don’t wait for inspiration to strike or for your
concentration to arrive. Make it happen. Time will quietly pass as you get
carried away in your dream world. Make a time table. It should be inclusive of
everything ranging from morning ablutions to bed time. It is not as impossible
as it sounds. As a student keep track of your examination time-tables as well.
As a job applicant you need to find out the deadline for submitting your
application and be on top of every related development. Be on the lookout for
new opportunities. If new notes or assignments are being handed out, make sure
that you get a copy. A Sloppy and half-hearted attempt won’t yield any results.
So remain alert to get the best out of you and your surroundings.
- ABANDON YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Your exam is
in a week and if you are still going through your notes, then that will take
you no-where. You will never be prepared. Top scoring students, say that
practicing questions that are most likely to be in the question paper increases
their productivity while taking the exam.
If you are
going to be running in a race tomorrow, you have got to leave the bench press
and practice on the tracks. Humans are creatures of habit. We are in the habit
of cramming all the books that come in our way. Students feel that they will
manage on the day of the exam. Complacency is your Achilles’s heel. Hence,
abandoning your comfort zone and moving out of it will do more good to you than
harm.
